What’s That Smell?
“…how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish unto God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?”

I once stayed with a friend who you would rightly describe as absolutely untidy.
Before I left, I was cleaning the bathtub in my friend’s house and got to the drain. It had that disgusting hair thing where strands of hair are looped in all the holes of the drain. It had obviously been there for a while but didn’t seem so bad since the water was still flowing down the drain.
I wasn’t going to clean it but then I heard God say to my spirit ” If you don’t, who will?” And I continued to hear this for the entire time I was cleaning out the drain.
When I started, I almost threw up – it turns out the muck in the drain was ugly, smelled like a gutter, and didn’t seem to end for ages but God told me to continue cleaning the drain.
I had to stick in a broomstick as far into the drain as it could go, roll it around to gather as much of the dirt as I could per time, and pull it out forcibly, against my own will. I did this 4 times or more.
Then it struck me what Jesus did for us:
(I) The smelly, pitch-black, weirdly textured gunk in the drain represents our Sin. It looks bad but bearable on the surface because our lives haven’t come to a total halt but it is actually MUCH worse underneath!
If we understood the depth of sin, we would want to puke!
(ii) Regardless of how deep, ugly, and smelly our sin is…God still sent us His Son who despite the pain of the cross came to cleanse us from all sin.
(iii) Jesus goes to the root of the sin, gathers the entirety of it, and helps us uproot it completely. He’ll do this regardless of what the sin is or how disgusting it is…because if He doesn’t, who will?
Since this revelation gave me a new perspective, I’ve never been more grateful for the Blood of Christ, who came to take away my sin forever more!
Apostle John couldn’t have put it better in John 1:29 (NIV): “The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”
LET US PRAY:
Dear Lord Jesus, I’ve never been more grateful for the Blood that you shed to take away my sin once and forever more! Please cleanse my conscience from every evil work. Help me by your Spirit to walk in my new life in Christ. Amen!
