Bezalel and Oholiab
Bezalel and Oholiab
“See, I have chosen Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge, and with all kinds of skills — to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver, and bronze, to cut and set stones, to work in wood, and to engage in all kinds of crafts.”
— Exodus 31:2-5 | NIV
“We need to change a wrong understanding of ministry. Ministry is not just that a man preaches. Work is ministry. Work is service.”
— Beulah Tokunbo Johnson
Bezalel and Oholiab are two individuals, not ‘priests’, chosen and anointed by God to lead the construction of the Tabernacle.
Let’s read and meditate on this story from Exodus 31:1-11
Exodus 31:1-11 | MSG
1-5 God spoke to Moses: “See what I’ve done; I’ve personally chosen Bezalel son of Uri, son of Hur of the tribe of Judah. I’ve filled him with the Spirit of God, giving him skill and know-how and expertise in every kind of craft to create designs and work in gold, silver, and bronze; to cut and set gemstones; to carve wood—he’s an all-around craftsman.
6-11 “Not only that, but I’ve given him Oholiab, son of Ahisamach of the tribe of Dan, to work with him. And to all who have an aptitude for crafts I’ve given the skills to make all the things I’ve commanded you: the Tent of Meeting, the Chest of The Testimony and its Atonement-Cover, all the implements for the Tent, the Table and its implements, the pure Lampstand and all its implements, the Altar of Incense, the Altar of Whole-Burnt-Offering and all its implements, the Washbasin and its base, the official vestments, the holy vestments for Aaron the priest and his sons in their priestly duties, the anointing oil, and the aromatic incense for the Holy Place—they’ll make everything just the way I’ve commanded you.”
Bezalel, whose name means “in the shadow of God,” was filled with the Spirit of God and endowed with divine wisdom, understanding, and skill. He was entrusted with the sacred task of crafting the elements of the Tabernacle—metalwork, woodwork, stonecutting, and more.
Alongside him was Oholiab, whose name is believed to mean “My tent is the Father.” He served as Bezalel’s assistant, particularly skilled in textiles and embroidery. Together, their craftsmanship fulfilled God’s command to build a dwelling place for His presence among the Israelites.
In the same way, God is calling you today to be His chosen vessel—anointed and skilled to build what reflects His glory. Your work—whether in ministry, the marketplace, or your home—is vital to the unfolding of God’s purpose in your family, community, and nation.
This calling is not limited to pulpit ministry. It’s about using your gifts, talents, and training as tools for kingdom impact.
In your church, bring your skill to the table. Don’t wait for a title, a pulpit, or a perfect invitation. Serve from the shadows with excellence.
In your workplace, approach your tasks with integrity, diligence, and the fear of God, not merely for promotion, but as a witness of Christ through your excellence.
In your business or enterprise, see your work as a platform for purpose. Yes, profit matters—but your higher calling is to provide solutions that serve humanity and reveal God’s wisdom.
You are not just a worker—you are a craftsman, a co-builder with God. Your work, when offered in obedience and anointing, becomes worship.
Let Us Pray
Father, open the eyes of my heart to see my calling clearly. Help me to understand my craft as a priesthood, not just work. Fill me with Your Spirit — with wisdom, understanding, knowledge, and skill — to serve humanity, glorify You, and bless lives. Anoint my hands, my mind, and my work, that through my craft Your glory will be revealed.
In Jesus’ name I declare: I am a craftsman. I am anointed for my work. My craft is my calling. My work preaches Christ. Through my craft, I serve humanity and glorify God.
In Jesus’ name, I pray.
Amen.
