Embrace Greatness
Embrace The Greatness God Has Planted In You
“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago.”
— Ephesians 2:10 | NLT
“Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you.”
— Isaiah 60:1 | NIV
God didn’t create you to live small or hidden. You are His masterpiece — handcrafted for good works, designed to reflect His glory. And yet, like Jonah, we often run from the very greatness God invites us into.
Jonah fled because the mission seemed too big, the responsibility too heavy. We do the same when we doubt our ability, fear judgment, or worry about standing out. This inner resistance — what psychologist Abraham Maslow called the Jonah Complex — keeps us from becoming all God has called us to be.
But here’s the good news: God equips those He calls. He doesn’t ask us to walk in greatness alone. His Spirit empowers us to rise, shine, and fulfill our purpose.
God-inspired Steps to Break Free
Acknowledge the Fear
“Search me, God, and know my heart… See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” — Psalm 139:23-24
Be honest with God about your fears. Journal or pray about what specific greatness you’re afraid of — is it leadership? Visibility? Success? Influence?
Choose Growth Over Comfort
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” — Joshua 1:9
Every day presents small opportunities to choose growth:
- Volunteer for a task that stretches you
- Speak when you’d normally stay silent
- Start that project you’ve delayed
Remember: courage is choosing growth despite fear.
Redefine Success as Obedience
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” — Colossians 3:23
The Jonah Complex often comes from fearing how others will measure our success. Instead, focus on pleasing God — success is walking in obedience to His call, no matter the outcome.
Embrace Imperfection
“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” — 2 Corinthians 12:9
Greatness doesn’t require perfection. God works through your flaws. Take the pressure off — aim for faithfulness, not flawlessness.
Surround Yourself with Encouragers
“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:11
Walk with people who cheer on your growth and won’t let you settle for less than God’s best. Distance yourself from voices that feed your fear.
Celebrate God’s Faithfulness
Pay attention to times when you feel truly alive — those moments of joy, clarity, or purpose (Maslow called these peak experiences). Let them remind you of what God has planted inside you. Seek those moments through worship, service, creativity, and connection.
Think It Over
- What God-given strength or opportunity have I been shrinking back from?
- What is one small, courageous step I can take today toward growth?
- How does redefining success as obedience free me from fear?
Write down one area where you’ve been playing small. Today, take a practical step: send the email, apply for the position, share the idea, or start that project. Let God meet you in that step of faith.
Let Us Pray
Father, thank You for shaping me as Your masterpiece. Forgive me for the times I have chosen comfort over calling, safety over growth. Strengthen my heart so I can say “yes” to the opportunities You place before me. Help me to trust that Your grace is enough, that Your power works through my weakness. I will rise and shine for Your glory, and I will walk boldly in all You have called me to.
In Jesus’ name, I pray.
Amen.
