Build the Altar Before the House
Today’s Teaching
Build the Altar Before the House
“The Lord appeared to Abram and said, ‘To your offspring I will give this land.’ So he built an altar there to the Lord, who had appeared to him. From there he went on toward the hills east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. There he built another altar to the Lord.”
— Genesis 12:7–8 (NIV)
Everywhere Abraham pitched his tent, he first built an altar. Not *after* he settled down. Not *when* life finally became comfortable. Before the tent went up, the altar went down. That specific sequence was not accidental; it was a profound spiritual declaration. Worship always comes first, and everything else in life must be built around it.
The true health of a home is determined by exactly what sits at its center. Many families build busy, fully furnished, and remarkably well-organized houses—yet constantly wonder why something vital still feels missing. What is missing is the altar. A home without a consistent prayer culture, without intentional family worship, and without God at its absolute core, is ultimately just a well-decorated tent. Build the altar first, and let every other detail of your life take its place around it.
Take Action Today:
Starting today, establish or restore one specific act of corporate worship inside your home. It could be a dedicated family prayer time, a shared scripture reading, or a focused moment of thanksgiving before meals. Make God the ultimate first priority of your house, not a final last resort.
Daily Prayer
“Lord, I choose today to put the altar back at the absolute center of my home. Where worship has been crowded out by busyness, distractions, or fatigue, forgive me and help me rebuild. As for me and my household, we will serve You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
