The Fear of Isaac (1)
Treasuring God Above All: The ‘Fear of Isaac’
Day 1 – The Altar: Worship Comes First
Date: Wednesday, September 17, 2025
“So he built an altar there and called on the name of the Lord…”
– Genesis 26:25a
Isaac’s first instinct when settling in a new place was to build an altar. Worship was not an afterthought or something to fit into his schedule later—it was his foundation. He understood a fundamental spiritual truth: unless God is honored first, everything else in life becomes misplaced and unstable.
For the church today, the altar represents much more than a physical structure. It symbolizes our consecration, our commitment to prayer, and our deep reverence for God. The altar is where we meet with the Almighty, where we surrender our will to His, and where we find the strength to live according to His purposes.
Too often, we unknowingly reverse God’s intended order. We rush toward the “well,” seeking provision, blessing, and material success before properly establishing our altar of worship. We pursue career advancement, financial security, and personal goals while allowing our prayer life to become secondary or neglected entirely.
But the fear of God— that holy reverence and awe that Isaac possessed— places Him above all else. It recognizes that every good thing we receive flows from our relationship with Him, not from our own efforts or strategies.
Daily Confession
“Lord, I place You first in my life. My altar will not be neglected or treated casually. Let worship and prayer be the unshakeable foundation of my existence. Help me to honor You above all competing priorities and distractions.”
Reflective Questions
- What does my current “altar life”—my patterns of worship, prayer, and devotion—actually look like?
- Have I allowed the pursuit of provision, success, or security to push aside my commitment to consistent worship and prayer?
- What one practical step can I take this week to strengthen and prioritize my altar time?
Prayer Points
- Personal Revival: “Lord, restore the passion of worship and prayer in my life. Rekindle the fire of devotion that may have grown dim.”
- Family and Church: “Let the altar of God be rebuilt and honored in my family and church community. May we be known as people who prioritize worship above all else.”
- Divine Order: “Give me grace to consistently honor You before pursuing provision, success, or any other blessing.”
Prayer
“Father, help me to build altars of worship before pursuing anything else in life. Transform my heart to honor
You first, above every competing priority or desire. Let my life reflect the same reverent devotion that marked
Isaac’s walk with You.”
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
