Christian Devotional Reflection
“When he had received the drink, Jesus said, ‘It is finished.’ With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.”
– John 19:30 NIV
The phrase “It is finished” is one of the most powerful declarations in history. Spoken by Jesus on the cross, it signifies not defeat, but absolute triumph over sin and death.
1. What Was Finished?
The Greek word “Tetelestai” means “paid in full”. Jesus was announcing that the debt of sin had been fully satisfied.
“He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross.”
– Colossians 2:13-14 NIV
Every prophecy, law requirement, and righteous demand of God was fully satisfied through Jesus’ obedience and sacrifice. Nothing more needs to be added to His work.
2. Fulfillment of Prophecy and the Law
The Old Testament pointed to Christ through shadows, sacrifices, and the Passover lamb. These were temporary, but Jesus became the once-for-all sacrifice for true redemption.
“For God’s will was for us to be made holy by the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ, once for all time.”
– Hebrews 10:10 NLT
The cross was not plan B; it was God’s plan from the beginning. Jesus fulfilled every law and prophecy as the Messiah.
3. Our Salvation Is Complete
The finished work of Christ shows that salvation is by grace through faith, not by human effort. We don’t work for salvation; we work from salvation.
“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”
– Ephesians 2:8-9 ESV
This truth brings rest. In Christ, we are accepted, adopted, and fully justified.
4. Victory Over Sin, Death, and the Devil
The resurrection proves the cross was effective. Jesus defeated sin and death, giving believers spiritual authority and freedom.
“Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting? … But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
– 1 Corinthians 15:55-57 NIV
The finished work of Christ ensures the enemy is defeated and believers walk in victory.
5. A Call to Rest and Live in His Victory
Christ’s finished work invites us into an active rest—trusting in what He has done while living empowered by the Spirit.
“For anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his.”
